I'm using a (highly) customized version of ~/.config/awesome/rc.lua and it contains these lines:

function awesome_gnome_quit()
    awesome.quit()
    awful.spawn.with_shell("killall xss-lock ; gnome-session-quit --logout --no-prompt")
end

And I'm using awesome_gnome_quit instead of awesome.quit everywhere in my local rc.lua script.

I'm not sure if modification of the original /etc/xdg/awesome/rc.lua should be in the scope of this package, so I would recommend you to update ~/.config/awesome/rc.lua instead.

oops! So the answer is - works for me. But I had issues with gnome-session-quit.

thats what I was using in the first place to cause the freeze haha

You can try to logout by calling awesome-client "awesome.quit()".

Hi. After latest OS updates I've got blank screen and awesome is not loading. Any tips?

Thanks @dynamo! I've pushed my updates: they should fix the startup failure, until the next GNOME release at least :)

Locally I also put notification-daemon just before awesome in RequiredComponents of awesome.session. I personally prefer that missed notifications don't disappear and I can review them. Pls let me know if I need to push these changes as well.
