Found the issue, and it's not about gphotofs itself it seems, but rather a conflict between gphotfs and gvfs-gphoto2's ptp automatic mount. It seems gvfs on LXQT with desktop enabled automatically does a ptp camera mount, which takes over the USB camera. By unmounting the ptp mounted camera through the file manager, then gphotofs has no issue mounting it.

Failing on accessing mount point:

% gphotofs -o nodev,noexec,uid=1000,gid=100,umask=002 hola/
% ... % ls hola/
ls: reading directory 'hola/': Input/output error

It used to work. BTW, there's no help on recompiling...
