Yeah sorry I understand. That was a thoughtless remark.

@ipaqmaster; that is not how that works and doesn't change anything in relation to that.
The only thing that can do for you is that in the event that I push an update to the PKGBUILD and the version matches the commit you happened to have build/installed, the epoch difference will force the detection of a difference. Otherwise your system would think nothing changed when it actually did.
It's basically a way I can force anyone using helpers into a forced rebuild but any other situation stays the same.

Learn to epoch.

@JL2210;

In regards to AUR helpers; they are not supported in any way. Important to note here is that a VCS package's SRCINFO/PKGBUILD recorded versions will basically never match up with the actual (eventually installed) version. These can therefore not be used to determine if there is a change or not (and it would basically look like there always is one until the build finishes).
The only way you could sort of figure out the version for a VCS packages is by executing the pkgver() function but you really shouldn't be parsing/sourcing the PKGBUILD like that, especially not if your helper is running as SU (sudo, doas, w/e)...

For the second point; there is technically an easy workaround for that if you want to mask that but that is not a path I suggest you take nor one I'm willing to provide as that goes completely against the whole point of marking the build. It looked like the host work-around could be removed but it turned out that was not yet possible.
You can switch to the release version instead and/or use that one as a base to pull a different version (e.g. RC or a specific commit package) from the website instead.

Using the submodules from sources (plus your host build fix) marks the build as dirty (shown as a + at the end of the version) which won't receive support from gnif. Don't know how to fix this, though, while still conforming to the VCS package guidelines.

This doesn't play too well with AUR helpers. It always says it has an update available but then never builds because it's already up-to-date

@MITKBconnoisseur: The gnif repo is the official source and there are no build issues with any of the recent patches/commits there as far as I can tell.
If there is a problem, please provide the complications resulting from a clean build and I'll look into it.

Every time I apply GNIF's patches for his own project this just crashes and burns in an avoidable way @ipaqmaster's patch fixes it for me. Can somebody who's serious take over this package?

NinjaSP commented on 2023-05-08 02:27 (UTC)

+1 this is very fumbly to rebuild with patches

Dont know what you mean yay is the easiest way to download aur stuff and works every time usually and updates. i had to git clone https://github.com/gnif/LookingGlass and apply my patch there but that does not package the exe so yaeh this aur.archlinux.org pkgbase has some issues.

https://aur.archlinux.org/pkgbase/looking-glass has the same problem but i did not have master commit there so not as important but https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/linux-vfio works every time
