I'm going to suggest this package be deprecated. The community nrpe package includes the check_nrpe plugin that this provides (plus just a few configuration and systemd files). Switching to that supported package should only require users change the location of check_nrpe in their /etc/nagios/objects/commands.cfg file. This was suggested back in 2016. Seems like it is about time.

Let me know if there is any reason to reconsider, and I'm open to suggestions regarding the best way to make the transition obvious/easy for users.

check_nrpe 4.0.0: arm and IA-32 have some memory corruption issues when using SSL at least, see https://github.com/NagiosEnterprises/nrpe/pull/228.

I wasn't thinking of updating the community package to "replace" this (being an unsupported package) so users would need to notice and make the decision to replace the package themselves. The reason this exists is fine; I'll leave it for now.

This package let's servers install just the check_nrpe command without the npre daemon, config files or systemd units. I am fine deprecating it and recommending users move to the community nrpe. Can we specify that nrpe replaces this package? The check_nrpe commands are installed in different places, can we help update configs or at least notify users?

I'm pretty sure this is covered by the nrpe package in [community] which provides nrpe and check_nrpe. I have my server running nrpe checks with just nrpe (not this package). Let me know if I am mistaken otherwise I will delete this duplicate soon. Cheers

This needs to be installed on the machine that is doing the monitoring (the machine that the nagios package is installed on). It is used by nagios to make calls to the client machines (the machines being monitored). Clients need to have nagios-nrpe package installed. They don't need nagios or this package installed. Server = the monitoring machine (req: nagios + nagios-nrpe-plugin) Client = the remote machine being monitored (req: nagios-nrpe + monitoring-plugins)

What is this? Is it the server side (what you install on the host you want to monitor) or the client side (what you install on your nagios server that does the monitoring)?

Ugh nevermind me, I'm slow. I thought this was run on the client. I realize now nagios-nrpe is run on the client. I think the dependency makes sense. Sorry for the noise.
