I've added https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/python-proton-vpn-local-agent-bin as optional dependency, I worked on https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/python-proton-vpn-local-agent a bit to build it from source, but I have a weird issue with it so I'm not depending this package on that by default for now.

For those who know a bit about rust packaging, the issue with building from source for me is: - If I copy the build so file using cp command it works fine - If I package it (using install in PKGBUILD) and put the file there by installing the package using pacman, It doesn't work! although the files have the same checksum.

I have no idea why is that and am open to any help on https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/python-proton-vpn-local-agent package

@shoryuken thank you, that worked!

@ali.molaei I'm not sure of technicalities of dependencies, but if you cannot force network-manager-applet as a dependency I think you should at least pin some comment explaining that getting it might fix issues. As it stands I accidentally found the solution at other package page https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/protonvpn-cli#comment-951908, and only since it's the newest one.

@ali.molaei - thanks a lot. works like a charm. and, thank you for having made this package!

@ali.molaei Yeah I totally get that you don't want to force GNOME package to everyone. Then maybe it should provide package options with secrets functionality to user to choose from when installing. Because right now it doesn't install any and if you don't have any preinstalled, the program would crash with not so user friendly error message.

@Dwa30v they added and removed the tag again, sorry, this should be fixed now using the commit https://github.com/ProtonVPN/python-proton-vpn-api-core/issues/1

try installing again in a minute

@mkudinov gnome-keyring is an optional dependency as I shouldn't force KDE users to install it

mkudinov commented on 2023-11-04 12:07 (UTC)

@ali.molaei Thank you, I've been able to install the package on a clean system.

However, gnome-keyring is still missing as a dependency. As you mentioned you use gnome, so I think it comes preinstalled for you, which is not the case for many other DEs/VMs. Without gnome-keyring I get

File "/usr/lib/python3.11/site-packages/keyring/backends/SecretService.py", line 43, in priority
    raise RuntimeError(
RuntimeError: The Secret Service daemon is neither running nor activatable through D-Bus

After installing it I got everything to launch and successfully connected to a server without modifying polkit.

Thank you again for your work.

@mkudinov I put the commit hash instead of tag for that package for now, you should be able to install again

ali.molaei commented on 2023-11-03 20:21 (UTC)

@mkudinov they removed a tag again, opened an issue for it, if they keep doing it I'll need to take another method of keeping the version (And I have no idea right now) https://github.com/ProtonVPN/python-proton-vpn-api-core/issues/1
