The package https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/r8168-dkms has a patch that makes the module compile with kernels >= 6.9.0

This module is completely broken for me as of Linux 6.9.x. My PHY completely disappeared. The fix was removing this package and letting the kernel use its in-tree driver.

If this doesn't build or work properly after a kernel update any more, and r8169 still doesn't work for some reason or other, I recommend trying the dkms version instead: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/r8168-dkms

Why it was removed from core and orphaned?

It's never been in [core]. It was in [extra].

r8169 has been able to handle the same cards as r8168 for a long time but with some differences in features, performance and stability.

One problem of the r8168 is that it always lags behind in terms of support for newer kernels, and it often requires patches to fix compatibility issues.

This, paired with the fact that I don't have the hardware anymore to test it, is the reason for the drop from official repositories.

Eventually r8168-lts will be dropped as well.

Seems like as of kernel 6.9 the in-kernel r8169 module replaces the r8168.
