This returns an ERROR: One or more files did not pass the validity check!

EDIT: I went ahead, cloned the repo, fixed the sha and now I am stuck again :)

==> Entering fakeroot environment... ==> Starting package()... ERROR: While executing gem ... (ArgumentError) "e>\n <" is not an octal string

Not really familiar with Ruby myself - I am wondering if somebody can advice on a fix?

Orphaning. I no longer use this package myself, am less familiar with the Ruby ecosystem than I used to be, and enjoy the Ruby ecosystem less than I used to.
