Great, a version that doesn't grind my system to a crawl (from which it failed to recover even after killing all related processes).

http://downloads.sourceforge.net/stellarium/stellarium-0.12.9.tar.gz is not available. I instead downloaded it from https://github.com/Stellarium/stellarium/releases/download/v0.12.9/stellarium-0.12.9.tar.gz The md5sum is the same.
Seems like stellarium is abandoning sourceforge
