If you encounter compilation problems, you might want to try out vlc-wayland-git which fixes some dependencies and downloads the sources from the most recent gitlab repo.

Despite the name, it works just fine on x11 as well. The "wayland" part in the name denotes a patch that was not officially merged which allows embedded video on the wayland platform.

Build passes now, thanks to zvbi 0.2.41 released yesterday to Arch repos.

Build fails for me as well (in French sorry, commit 674cc68b264931069c7d0fb6843f1ac1d43765ee, 2023-02-10):

Downgrading zvbi to 0.2.39 fixes the issue.

their github repo has not update since 09-29, any reason not to use their gitlab instance repo https://code.videolan.org/videolan/vlc ?
