Thanks to @powslayer and @Entryhazard for reporting the issue.
I just tried and the ftp:// source seems to be working from here now.
Anyway, I have switched the source to https://. This should result in lower chances of firewall issues and stronger security guarantees.

The FTP source still does not work. As per @Entryhazard the new build script should download from http://www.unixodbc.org/unixODBC-${pkgver}.tar.gz . After changing the pkgbuild on my system I was able to install the package.

The FTP source doesn't work anymore and the build dies in the attempt of downloading it, i had to manually download from the HTTP source from the same site, so I suggest to change the build script to download from http://www.unixodbc.org/unixODBC-${pkgver}.tar.gz instead
