I fear, no patch will come, the development is dead, the current release is 6 years old. I contacted the developer and he advised me to switch to a different editor. pygtk currently has 371 dependencies, so I don't see a reason to be an early adopter of "pygtk-lessness". A "medit-minimal" package without the pygtk dependency surely has its pros, but the the current medit package offering the integrated terminal feature also has its selling point, right?

What about making pygtk and python2 an optdepend, actually? Is it possible to recognize if it is installed and set the configure options accordingly?

It's pygtk I want to get rid of. I build enough AUR package without building a junk package that the editor doesn't need. python2 is still needed for many things but when that heads to the AUR then it'l be two junk packages. No need to edit the PKGBUILD. I'll just maintain my own until a python3 patch comes along.

@severach: I did as you proposed but unfortunately the integrated terminal functionality (not the Python console but just the regular bash terminal) dies as well when compiling without Python. I am using this integrated terminal myself and wouldn't like to loose it... I am sure, python2 will be available from AUR and, since medit is an AUR package itself, I don't see big harm in relying on other AUR packages. What do you think?

It's using python2 which is going away. Losing python2 functionality is not losing any functionality. Python2 should be a depend. None of the python functions will work without it. Python can come back if someone makes a python3 patch for it.

@severach: Could you please elaborate? The package builds fine the way it is on my machine (up to date Arch install). Why compiling without Python and losing functionality? Also, python is a makedepend, not a depend, already.

Remove dependencies python, pygtk. depends python isn't even correct. Change PYTHON=python2 to --with-python=no.
