Microsoft is finally shutting down Skype in May

There is a problem with Skype being stuck on the login screen on first launch. That happens when your org.freedesktop.secrets provider doesn't have a keyring configured, i.e. also first launch.

I don't know if this is a quirk of libsecret or Skype itself, but we can't do pretty much anything about it anyway.

Solutions are simple though:

  1. Despite the login screen being stuck, the login itself is actually successful. So just kill it and run Skype again, it should be fine after that.

  2. Configure your default keyring manually (using seahorse, kwalletmanager etc.) before running Skype.

To get automatic login, install a package that provides org.freedesktop.secrets, e.g. gnome-keyring.

To get a systray icon, install libappindicator-gtk3. On GNOME, then install the appindicator extension.

Also try to start with clean ~/.config/skypeforlinux/. I had several times it being stuck in a broken state.

I use KDE Wallet for that and can't reproduce the issue. None of that packages are installed in my system. So maybe it's GNOME Keyring quirks.

Edit: For me, using KDE Wallet no re-login needed ever after restart or reboot.

Edit: You can use seahorse to inspect GNOME Keyring contents.

Yes, the problem is not from Skype itself, but I was getting those error messages after entering my username and password to log in to Skype. I have gnome-keyring installed, but not sure if it's working well with Skype, since I usually have to enter my credentials after restarting the system. But now even that didn't work until I installed those other packages.

This error is not from Skype itself. What secret service do you use?

After updating my system (but not Skype itself) I was unable to log in to Skype seeing the following messages:

(skypeforlinux:10179): GLib-GIO-CRITICAL **: 06:35:47.519: g_task_return_error: assertion 'error != NULL' failed

(skypeforlinux:10179): GLib-GIO-CRITICAL *: 06:35:47.519: GTask secret_service_real_prompt_async (source object: 0x12d4012eafe0, source tag: 0x73ff3830b640) finalized without ever returning (using g_task_return_()). This potentially indicates a bug in the program.

(skypeforlinux:10179): GLib-GIO-CRITICAL **: 06:35:47.520: g_task_return_error: assertion '!task->ever_returned' failed Error occurred in handler for 'keychain:set-password': [Error: Remote peer disconnected]

I installed gio-qt (I'm on KDE) which also pulled glibmm and libsigc++ as dependencies and that solved the problem. In case someone finds the same problem or maybe some of those packages may be needed as a dependency for the skypeforlinux-bin package.

I use Plasma 6 and see no problems.

Although, Plasma 6 was released already 4 months ago, in February. And this package was only created in March. I.e. it didn't even exist before Plasma 6 release.

I don't know exactly. Used it like ... 2 months ago and it worked? Before Plasma6?

Hanabishi commented on 2024-06-28 16:58 (UTC)

Can't reproduce. What do you mean by anymore? Since what time/version?

Also I hope you realize that this is unofficial package and has nothing to do with Microsoft. If there are problems with the app itself, we can't do anything here.

Absolutely does not work anymore. After login with my skype account, the app remains white. Running from cli I get this:
