@Bohdanator you need to install both packages at the same time with 'pacman -U'.

I need to do the same as progdan, otherwise restarting x results in "Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module".

You don't even manually need to modprobe for it. Nor shutdown X while making the switch.

The right and logical way would be to shutdown X (init 3) and from terminal run # pacman -Rdd nvidia nvidia-utils (-Rdd needed because some apps might complain about libgl dependency provided by nvidia-utils) # pacman -U nvidia-beta nvidia-utils-beta lib32-nvidia-utils-beta # rmmod nvidia # modprobe nvidia (the last two commands should be performed by the nvidia-beta package upon install, but better make sure...). Then you can return to init 5 without need to reboot.

Here is what I did to install the beta version and it worked. Let me know if there is an easier way. Also, in general, where should instructions like these be documented? Should we put AUR package help in the wiki.archlinux.org or do we just let people get cross-eyed reading all the comments like this one? # build nvidia-beta, nvidia-utils-beta and lib32-nvidia-beta (if needed) with yaourt # (have EXPORT=2 in .yaourtrc so package gets copied to pacman cache) # or build with "makepkg" (nvidia-beta needs "makepkg -d") # now to change nvidia, nvidia-utils and lib32-nvidia to the beta versions: cd /var/cache/pacman/pkg pacman -R nvidia pacman -U nvidia-utils-beta-304.22-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz pacman -Udd nvidia-beta-304.22-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz pacman -U lib32-nvidia-utils-beta-304.22-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz reboot

nvidia-beta 302.17-2 requires kmod 9-2 (in [testing] atm). If you do not use [testing], DO NOT update nvidia-beta. kmod 9-2 moves kernel modules from /lib to /usr/lib, so REMEMBER TO UPDATE nvidia-beta when you update to kmod 9-2. You won't be able to start X server otherwise.

Hi progdan, just to let you know (though you probably already do) about the upcoming kmod changes. I'll be making the changes in my own offshoot of your package (nvidia-beta-all) as soon as it hits [testing], which is basically right now I think, not sure what you'd want to do.
