A couple of reasons: Most chromebook don't have a lot of computational power so compiling can be annoying. Upstream occasionally broke things and it was annoying creating patches only to realise the issue is fixed two hours later sometimes. Deb packages don't get updated as regularly and are more stable. I may create -git versions of these packages though for people who want to use that.

Why the switch to .deb packages?

I just switched this package to install from .deb package instead of compiling and installing from git. The package will also install a script file for you to manually run after install to symlink the correct conf files. Any issues let me know. I will be switching the dependencies 'libgestures' and 'libevdevc' to install from .deb packages as well shortly.
